New Build Back Garden in Radlett

Brief

This garden was for a new build property located in Radlett. The client really wanted the “wow” factor, as it was her first house, and she was keen to show it off and entertain in style. She has a busy, hard-working lifestyle, so low maintenance was a priority, along with being able to use the garden at all hours.

Design & build

As you enter the garden from the kitchen through the double doors, you step out onto a pale grey porcelain patio. This brings the inside out and the outside in, giving the user the ideal space for alfresco dining and entertaining.

Occupying the central area is a small but adequate artificial lawn. Behind it, you step up onto a slightly raised composite deck with floating benches on two sides, where you can take a seat and look back towards the house.

Most of the rear boundary of the garden was made up of an unsightly red brick garage wall, so we screened it off with western red cedar battening. This also served to frame a striking Arabesque-style trellis feature with LED back-lighting and and an up/down light on each side. This gives the garden a real focal point and topic for conversation.

Along the left side of the garden, a stepping stone path connects with the rear access to the property. To harmonise with the patio, the stones are again pale grey porcelain and set off by lightly coloured gravel. In the borders, formal yet contemporary planting in line with the client’s brief is also set off by the same gravel.

We installed an extensive lighting scheme throughout the garden. Operated by a remote-controlled wise box, it allows the user to illuminate any or all of the outside spaces from anywhere in the property.

This garden is a good example of a high-end, low-maintenance outside space for contemporary tastes. It’s a brief we are coming across increasingly often, so we’re sure there’ll be many more like it!
